To provide personnel with the knowledge and skills so that they can take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency in the workplace. On completion of this activity, participants will be able to demonstrate a competence in the theory and practice of the following:

 

•  Have an appreciation of the basic body structure and its functions

•  Make an assessment of the needs of casualties and threats to their own safety

•  Have an understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergencies including the ability to:

 

•  Unconsciousness

•  Position the casualty

•  Apply resuscitation techniques

•  Control bleeding

•  Apply appropriate measures of basic shock management

•  Apply appropriate measures in the event of burns and scalds, including electrical, and chemical burns

•  Eye injuries

•  Soft tissue injuries

•  Apply rescue and transport of a casualty technique

•  Improvise bandages and use materials in an emergency kit

•  Knowledge of basic fracture immobilisation techniques

 

COMPETENCY

 

To be awarded a certificate in Intermediate First Aid in accordance with the requirements of international standards participants must;

demonstrate the correct techniques and procedures on a mannequin or person of the following skills:

 

•  how to safely approach a victim

•  Treat for soft tissue injuries

•  Conduct a primary survey

•  Treat burns

•  Control bleeding

•  Improvise splints

•  Shock management

•  Use contents of a first aid kit

•  Treat for eye injuries

•  how to safely transport a victim
