To provide personnel with the knowledge and skills so that they can take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency in a shipboard environment.

 

On completion of this activity, participants will be able to demonstrate a competence in the theory and practice of the following:

•  Have an appreciation of the basic body structure and its functions

•  Make an assessment of the needs of casualties and threats to their own safety

•  Have an understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergencies including the ability to:

 

•  Position the casualty

•  Apply resuscitation techniques

•  Control bleeding

•  Apply appropriate measures of basic shock management

•  Apply appropriate measures in the event of burns and scalds, including electrical, and chemical burns

•  Apply rescue and transport of a casualty technique

•  Improvise bandages and use materials in an emergency kit

•  Knowledge of basic fracture immobilisation techniques

 

 

COMPETENCY

 

To be awarded a certificate in Basic First Aid in accordance with the requirements of international standards participants must;

 

demonstrate the correct techniques and procedures on a mannequin or person of the following skills:

 

•  how to safely approach a victim

•  conduct a primary survey

•  Control bleeding

•  Treat burns

•  Improvise splints

•  Use contents of a first aid kit

•  how to safely transport a victim

•  conduct a primary survey
