To provide seafarers with the knowledge and skills so that they can take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency in a shipboard environment. On completion of this activity, participants will be able to demonstrate a competence in the theory and practice of the following:
Have an appreciation of the basic body structure and its functions
Make an assessment of the needs of casualties and threats to their own safety
Have an understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergencies including the ability to:
Position the casualty Apply resuscitation techniques Control bleeding Apply appropriate measures of basic shock management Apply appropriate measures in the event of burns and scalds, including electrical and chemical burns |
Apply rescue and transport of a casualty technique Improvise bandages and use materials in an emergency kit Knowledge of basic fracture immobilisation techniques |
